Buddhist Thought of the Day

Buddha's teachings are so simple and straightforward. If you find them complicated, it is only because you have made them so. You may think, I have a Ph.D. and have amassed all this knowledge, yet I still can't figure out how to begin practicing Dharma. The remedy is to take a good look at your own mind. Lama Thubten Yeshe , in " Wisdom Energy " I find this laughable in it's simplicity, absurdity and truthfulness. Buddha's teaching are very simple but to put them into practice ain't so simple, ya know?!

Political/Social/Religious Question of the Day

Is Christianity under attack in America? I read that Fox has run a series of reports about this but what piqued my interest was this 2 day conversation on my alumni mailing list. I just don't see it. Christian conservatives are under attack, maybe, but if you are not following the ideals of Christ you should be attacked (IF you proclaim to be a Christian). Right?

Buddhist Thought of the Day

It is extremely important to investigate the causes or origins of suffering. One must begin that process by appreciating the impermanent, transient nature of our existence. All things, events and phenomena are dynamic, changing every moment, nothing remains static. Meditating on one’s blood circulation could serve to reinforce this idea: the blood is constantly flowing, it never stands still…

More Kwanzaa fun.

If you really want freedom, happiness will arise From happiness will come rapture When your mind is enraptured, your body is tranquil When your body is tranquil, you will know bliss Because you are blissful, your mind will concentrate easily Being concentrated, you will see things as they really are In so seeing, you will become aware that life is a miracle Being so aware, you will lose all your attachments As you cease grasping, so you will be freed. Obama Lands Three-book Deal with Crown/Random Children's : Barack Obama , who in January will be the only African American U.S. Senator, has cut a $1.9 million three-book deal with Crown/Random House Children's Books . The contract, which is still pending approval from the Senate Ethics Committee , calls for two adult books and one children's book, for which Obama will receive $1.7 million and $200,000, respectively. The AP reported that the first two volumes--a political treatise and a autobiographical YA story about his growing up to be a senator--will appear in 2006. Crown released Obama's first book, Dreams From My Father , in 1995. After Obama's keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention last summer, the autobiography became a best-seller. Proceeds from the sale of the Random title will be given to charity. Neither the publishers nor the author provided information on the third volume.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

Life's easy to live for someone unscrupulous, cunning as a crow, corrupt, back-biting, forward, & brash; But for someone who's constantly scrupulous, cautious, observant, sincere, pure in his livelihood, clean in his pursuits, it's hard. Dhammapada, 18, translated by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.

Buddhist Thought of the Day

This is the work of those who are skilled and peaceful, who seek the good: May they be able and upright, straightforward, of gentle speech and not proud. May they be content and easily supported, unburdened, with their senses calmed. May they be wise, not arrogant and without desire for the possessions of others. May they do nothing mean or that the wise would reprove. May all things be happy. May they live in safety and joy. Metta Suta

Are you positive or negative?

In my current, and seemingly perpetual, quest for self improvement I came across a book called Positive Energy: 10 Extraordinary Prescriptions for Transforming fatigue, Stress & Fear Into Vibrance, Strength & Love ( Judith Orloff , MD). I've only glanced through it but I did find this one passage where she defines positive people. positive People(Persons) Are: Committed to developing compassion toward themselves and others, and having an open heart Courageous about following their dreams Authentic; they believe in themselves, even when the world is crumbling around them Aware of their dark side and are trying to heal it Willing to learn from their mistakes Positive People(Persons) Aren't: Obsessed with seeming perfect or positive all the time Beating themselves to a pulp over their shortcomings or floundering in a black hole of pessimism Constantly mired in fear or tolerant of letting their hearts harden Squeaky-clean do-gooders who...

Recipe for a Healthy Christmas Season

I know this is cheesy but hey! It's Christmas! Start with a heaping scoop of simplicity. Though some cools prefer to use perfection as the primary ingredient, most people find that it leaves a bitter aftertaste. Stir in 1 tablespoon of holiday cheer and 1/4 cup of Christmas spirit. Add a cup of the milk of human kindness. Stir in 1/2 cup each of thoughts, wishes and memories, then warm in the heart till bubbly & delicious. Season with generosity, garnish with a sprig of mistletow and serve with hugs & kisses.

Buddhist Thought of the Day - Mental Non-Virtues

Even though the training in ethics takes many forms, the ethics of abandoning the ten non-virtues is their basis. Of the ten non-virtues, three pertain to bodily actions, four to verbal actions, and three to mental actions. The three mental non-virtues are: Covetousness: thinking, "May this become mine," desiring something that belongs to another. Harmful intent: wishing to injure others, be it great or small injury. Wrong view: viewing some existent thing, such as rebirth, cause and effect, or the Three Jewels*, as non-existent. The opposite of these ten non-virtues are the ten virtues, and engaging in them is called the practice of ethics. *The core of Buddhism: Buddha, his doctrine (Dharma), and the Spiritual Community.

Big ups to my high school classmate

From Tennessean music writer Nicole Keiper via Brad Schmitt's column: If Nashville-born singer Laura Cantrell hasn't landed on your radar before, she's sure fixin' to now. Influential indie-rock label Matador (responsible for indie mainstays such as Guided By Voices , Interpol and Pavement ) just announced her addition to its roster. For perspective: Matador's pretty much to indie rock what Coke is to soda. Her first Matador release is slated for release next spring. Blockbuster dropping late fees as of Jan. 1 I worked at BB Video for several years and "extended rental fees" were a HUGE part of the business. It's hard to imagine they did this instead of dropping prices...considering how easily rental copies pay for themselves! A $20.00 DVD, which BBV probably gets for $15; if it rents 5x at $4.00 or so, everything after that is profit. Add late fees and you are getting an additional $2 per copy. If they drop the price it will take more rentals but the potential for charging late fees remains whereas without late fees they potential for loss due to copies not on the shelf and stolen merch increases. Seems like a really odd choice.

Even though the training in ethics takes many forms, the ethics of abandoning the ten non-virtues is their basis. Of the ten non-virtues, three pertain to bodily actions, four to verbal actions, and three to mental actions. The four verbal non-virtues are: 1. Lying: deceiving others through spoken words or physical gestures. 2. Divisiveness: creating dissension by causing those in agreement to disagree still further. 3. Harshness: abusing others. 4. Senselessness: talking about foolish things motivated by desire and so forth. The opposite of these ten non-virtues are the ten virtues, and engaging in them is called the practice of ethics.

First Hand Account of playing with Ray Charles. Perfection was drummer's sole mission. Ray Charles moved to his own beat, demanded that others do the same By JOHN BRYANT / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News With Ray's generation of jazz musicians, every time on a stage was a contest to see who could cut it and who couldn't. There was no forgiving or forgetting. Ray demanded that a musician play with his tempo and dynamics, and be able to read music and improvise. You had to be comfortable with rock, pop, blues, country, and most important, jazz. And so, there was a price to pay if you hit a wrong note, played too loudly or, if you're the drummer, failed to attach your mind and soul to his feet. The punishment was immediate, usually delivered with a quick upper body turn in a burst of fury. He combined hot directives with a look that burned a hole through you and made you freeze at the same time. If the drummer listened to his own clock instead of wat...

Bush Joke of the Day

The President, the First Lady and Dick Cheney are flying on Air Force One. George looks at Laura, chuckles and says, "You know, I could throw a $1,000.00 bill out the window right now and make somebody very happy." Laura shrugs her shoulders and says, "Well, I could throw ten $100.00 bills out the window and make 10 people very happy." Cheney says, "Of course then, I could throw one-hundred $10.00 bills out the window and make a hundred people very happy." The pilot rolls his eyes, looks at all of them and says to his co-pilot, "Such bigshots back there.....hell, I could throw all of them out the window and make 56 million people very happy." Remember it's a joke. I do not endorse throwing people out of a plane. I do endorse dropping money from a plane

Speaking of Buddhism and Christ

I am reading this great book right now. The book is called Lamb: the Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Best Pal by Christopher Moore . If you don't like your Jesus stories told irreverently, don't bother, but if you think there is more to the story than we've been told or if you have heard and like John Prine 's " Jesus, The Missing Years " you are gonna love this book. It's funny. It's told from the perspective of Jesus' childhood friend and from the perspective of this same person who's been dead for 2000 years. It's insightful. The purpose seems to be to flesh out the years between Jesus challenging the Pharisee and his return to be baptized. It makes Jesus into a real person not a mythological character...he thinks, he feels, he wonders, he has friends and family. I don't know if it's completely accuate, historically, but it works for my level of knowledge of the history of world in that era. Like I said it's qu...

Buddhist Thought of the Day - Ethics

The 1st of the Four Noble Truths is the " Truth of Suffering ", the 2nd is " absolute understanding " (Loosely translated). The following is related to the law of cause and effect and the the law of Karma which will help us understand our attachment to desire: Even though the training in ethics takes many forms, the ethics of abandoning the ten non-virtues is their basis. Of the ten non-virtues, three pertain to bodily actions, four to verbal actions, and three to mental actions. The three physical non-virtues are: 1. Taking the life of a living being: ranging from killing an insect to killing a human. 2. Stealing: taking away another's property without his consent, regardless of its value, whether the deed is done by oneself or through another. 3. Sexual misconduct: committing adultery. The opposite of these ten non-virtues are the ten virtues, and engaging in them is called the practice of ethics. The interesting thing I've discovered...

Is It a Stroke?

Is It a Stroke? Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: Ask the individual to smile. Ask him or her to raise both arms. Ask the person to speak a simple sentence. If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the general public to learn the three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage. Remember if they can't smi...
